Iran reports highest daily COVID-19 cases, 762,068 in total

TEHRAN, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Iran reported on Sunday 12,543 new cases of COVID-19, its highest daily figure so far, taking the total infections in the country to 762,068.

And 2,544 of the new infected had to be hospitalized, the spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education Sima Sadat Lari said at her daily briefing.

In the past 24 hours, 459 deaths from the pandemic were recorded, which makes death toll hit 41,493 in Iran, according to Sadat Lari.

She said 558,818 COVID-19 patients have recovered or been discharged from Iranian hospitals, while currently 5,666 are in critical condition in intensive care units.

The risk of infection remains high in 27 out of 31 Iranian provinces, the spokeswoman added.

On Saturday, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani announced a new set of restrictions to be implemented in more than 100 cities across the country, seeking to deal with the current surge of the outbreak. Enditem
