PARIS, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- France on Sunday counted a cumulative total of 1,981,827 infections with COVID-19, after 27,228 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours, official data showed.

The number of new infections was lower than 32,095 registered on Saturday, but still high at a level unseen during the first wave. The total deaths from the coronavirus-caused disease rose by 302 to 44,548.

The number of people in hospital for COVID-19 surged to 33,050 on Sunday from 32,499 a day earlier. Intensive care admissions stood at 4,880, occupying most of the country's initial 5,100 resuscitation beds.

Amid deteriorating health situation, France entered a second nationwide containment last month to contain the virus resurgence. Only necessary trips to work, to buy essential goods, for medical emergency or for an hour exercise daily are allowed.

If the virus spreads further in the coming days, the government could impose more restrictions. But rules could be relaxed over year-end holidays if the pandemic situation allows so, Prime Minister Jean Castex said earlier this week.

As the world is struggling to contain the pandemic, countries including France, China, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States are racing to find a vaccine.

According to the website of the World Health Organization, as of Nov. 12, there were 212 COVID-19 candidate vaccines being developed worldwide, and 48 of them were in clinical trials. Enditem
