Live COVID-19 updates: Germany reports 10,824 new cases

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BERLIN -- New COVID-19 infections in Germany increased by 10,824 within one day, bringing the total to 801,327, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Monday.

The number of new COVID-19 cases reported last Monday was higher at 13,363, according to data from RKI, the federal government agency for disease control and prevention. The peak was reached last Friday with 23,542 recorded cases.

LONDON -- British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Monday that he feels "great" on the first working day since he went into self-isolation late Sunday after contacting with someone who tested positive for coronavirus.

Johnson started self isolation on Sunday after having a meeting with some lawmakers in 10 Downing Street on Thursday morning, including MP for Ashfield Lee Anderson, who later developed coronavirus symptoms and tested positive, Sky News reported.

ABUJA -- The number of COVID-19 infections in Nigeria has exceeded 65,000 amid fears of a second wave despite slower increase in daily new cases.

With 152 new infections confirmed by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control late Sunday, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the West African country has reached 65,148.

NAIROBI -- Kenya's ministry of education said on Monday that basic learning institutions will reopen fully in January, even as the country grapples with surging COVID-19 infections and fatalities.

George Magoha, Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Education said that full resumption of in-person learning on Jan. 4, 2021, will be accompanied by stringent measures to curb the spread of coronavirus.

BEIJING -- China's Ministry of Transport has released a guideline to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 through imported cold-chain foods in road and water transportation.

It urged all companies, docks, and freight terminals involved in cold-chain logistics to protect their frontline employees, stressing protective equipment distribution, temperature checks, and regular nucleic acid testing.

HANOI -- Vietnam reported two new cases of COVID-19 infection on Monday, bringing its total confirmed cases to 1,283 with 35 deaths from the disease so far, according to its Ministry of Health.

Both new cases are Vietnamese citizens who recently entered the country from abroad and were quarantined upon arrival, said the ministry.

TEHRAN -- Iran on Monday registered 486 daily deaths over COVID-19 and 13,053 new cases over the past 24 hours, the highest daily figures since the outbreak of the disease in the country on Feb. 19.

Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, said during her daily briefing that 3,133 of the newly infected patients were hospitalized. Enditem
