HOUSTON, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Indoor and outdoor dining was prohibited for two weeks starting Monday in the U.S. state of New Mexico in an effort to curb the increase of COVID-19 cases.
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced the restrictions late last week, one of the strictest efforts since March this year.
The restrictions cover not only restaurants but also breweries, wineries, distillers, cafes, and coffee shops. Grisham said this is what needs to happen to save New Mexicans and help control the spread of COVID-19. As of Sunday, the state had a total of 64,201 cases.
On Sunday, New Mexico reported over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases and seven more deaths, bringing the death toll to 1,215, according to figures released by the governor's office. The state has seen more than 1,000 new cases a day since early this month as hospitalizations continue to climb.
Counties in the northwestern part of the state, which had been hit hard at the start of the pandemic in spring, have seen an uptick of cases in the past weeks. Enditem
