JAKARTA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- A 6.3-magnitude quake jolted Indonesia's western province of West Sumatra on Tuesday morning and no casualties were immediately reported, an official said.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency did not issue any tsunami warning as the quake did not potentially trigger giant waves.

The quake struck at 8:44 a.m. local time, with the epicenter located 109 km southwest of Tuapejat, the capital of Mentawai islands district and a depth of 10 km under the seabed, it said.

The intensity of the quake was felt between III and IV MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in Padang city, the capital of the province, Painan town and Sipora island.

The tremors were also felt in nearby Bengkulu and Jambi provinces.

Head of the emergency and logistics unit of the Provincial Disaster Management Agency Rumainur Bakar said the jolts led residents close to the epicenter to rush out of their houses, but did not trigger panic.

"So far, there are no reports of damage to houses or buildings, especially those in the nearest spot to the quake epicenter," the official told Xinhua.

Indonesia has been frequently hit by earthquakes as it lies on a quake-prone zone in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Enditem
