SUVA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Fijians have been urged to be vigilant over fish poisoning during the Balolo season, a time of enjoying the local delicacy or an edible sea worm.

According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), Fiji's Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau warned on Tuesday that there was a high chance for people to suffer fish poisoning in the Balolo season with the current hot weather.

He said that during the time of the Balolo season, "people need to be very careful" of the fishes including kawakawa (grouper) and donu (coral trout), adding that some of the commonly eaten fishes feed on Balolo at this time of the year and can become poisonous.

Over the past years, there were reports of deaths from fish poisoning in Fiji. In Vanua Levu, Fiji's second largest island, Balolo poisoning is believed to have claimed one life recently.

In Fiji, all major fish markets have been provided with a list of poisonous fishes including kawakawa (grouper) and donu (coral trout) that are Fiji's most popular fishes to eat. Enditem
