Live COVID-19 updates: Los Angeles to tighten pandemic restrictions amid COVID-19 surge

BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 8,912,907 on Wednesday as 38,617 new cases were registered across the country in the past 24 hours, said latest data released by the federal health ministry.

With 449 deaths since Tuesday morning, the total death toll in the country due to the pandemic mounted to 130,519, added the ministry's data.

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the United States with a population of over 10 million, will tighten pandemic safeguards and restrictions amid COVID-19 surge, authorities said Tuesday.

Starting Friday, restaurants, breweries, wineries, bars, and all other non-essential retail establishments must close from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. local time. Outdoor gatherings remain the only gatherings permitted, and they must only include a maximum of 15 people who are members of no more than 3 households, according to the county's new guidelines.

SYDNEY -- Despite hopes for Australia to open its domestic borders by Christmas, a developing outbreak in the state of South Australia (SA) forced some authorities on Wednesday to advise against unnecessary travel.

As of Wednesday morning SA officially had 34 active cases of COVID-19, with health authorities warning of further clusters and urging those in the vicinity of known cases to get tested.

PHNOM PENH -- A Cambodian woman tested positive for the COVID-19 after arriving in the kingdom from the United States, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said in a statement on Wednesday.

The 49-year-old woman landed in capital Phnom Penh on Monday from the United States via a connecting flight in South Korea.

BERLIN -- Germany's confirmed COVID-19 cases rose by 17,561 to 833,307, said the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the federal government agency for disease control and prevention, on Wednesday.

The total death toll from the disease rose by 305 to 13,119, the RKI added. Enditem
