BAGHDAD -- A commando force of the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) conducted an operation against militants of the extremist Islamic State (IS) group in Iraq's northern province of Kirkuk, leaving 16 IS militants killed, the Iraqi military said on Friday.

The CTS commandos, backed by international U.S.-led coalition aircraft, attacked IS hideouts in the rugged areas of Wadi-Zghaiton and Wadi al-Khanajir in the southwest of the namesake provincial capital Kirkuk, some 250 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Yahia Rasoul spokesman of the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi forces said in a statement. BUCHAREST -- Moldova's Central Electoral Commission (CEC) on Friday validated the results of the second round of the presidential election and confirmed that Maia Sandu was elected as the new president.

"The electoral contestant Maia Sandu, nominated by the PAS (Party of Action and Solidarity) and has accumulated 943,006 votes, is declared elected," announced CEC Chairman Dorin Cimil, adding that the other candidate, incumbent President Igor Dodon, had garnered 690,615 votes. KAMPALA -- The death toll from violent protests in parts of Uganda after the arrest of opposition presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi has risen to 28, a police spokesperson said on Friday.

Twelve more people succumbed to their injuries sustained in the Wednesday and Thursday protests, police spokesman Fred Enanga said.

Authorities said at least 75 people were injured with bullet wounds, tear gas canisters and hit-and-run attacks. (Uganda-Protest-Death Toll)

CANBERRA -- The Premier of South Australia (SA) Steven Marshall has announced that the Australian state's hard coronavirus lockdown will end on Saturday night, three days earlier than first planned.

Marshall made the announcement on Friday while reporting that SA had recorded three new confirmed cases of COVID-19, all of which were already in isolation after being linked to a new outbreak that was identified on Sunday. (Australia-SA-Lockdown) Enditem
