MOSCOW, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday called on members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to enhance cooperation in the cybersecurity sector.

Cooperation between APEC members in the widespread adoption of information technologies could play a positive role in a range of fields, Putin said in his speech at the 27th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting held virtually.

"We believe it is worth thinking about coordinating APEC efforts on protecting personal information and preventing IT offences," the president said.

"In expert estimates, by 2021 the world may lose about six trillion dollars due to cybercrime," he added.

APEC is a regional economic forum established in 1989 to leverage the growing interdependence of the Asia-Pacific. APEC's 21 members aim to create greater prosperity for the people of the region by promoting balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative and secure growth and by accelerating regional economic integration.
