6 killed, many hospitalized after consuming toxic liquor in India's Uttar Pradesh

NEW DELHI, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and many others hospitalized after taken ill allegedly due to consumption of toxic liquor in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said Saturday.

The deaths took place at village Amillia in district Prayagraj, about 221 km south of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"An incident about the consumption of toxic liquor has been reported from village Amillia here. A team headed by district magistrate had rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation," an official at Prayagraj collectorate said.

According to locals, the victims have purchased the liquor from a shop run by husband-wife.

"Our team is visiting the houses of people that have consumed the liquor to see if they are alright," district magistrate Bhanu Chandra Goswami said. "The exact cause of the deaths can be confirmed only after autopsies and sample reports of the liquor."

According to Goswami, the samples of liquor have been sent for laboratory testing. Enditem
