BEIJING -- The cooperative mechanism between China and Central and Eastern European Countries has played a positive role in their joint efforts against the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday.

In a phone conversation with Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto, Wang said China-Hungary relations have maintained a sound momentum of development.

WASHINGTON -- The Five Eyes Alliance countries should stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs, which are China's internal affairs, and "turn their eyes to their own governance issues that urgently need addressing," the Chinese embassy in the United States urged Friday.

The embassy spokesperson made the remark in response to a joint statement by Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Britain and the United States about China's decision on the eligibility of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Legislative Council's members.

UNITED NATIONS -- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday told the leaders of the Group of 20 that efforts must be made to avoid letting the COVID-19 pandemic lead to a debt pandemic.

"A domino effect of bankruptcies could devastate the global economy. We cannot let the COVID pandemic lead to a debt pandemic," the UN chief told reporters at a hybrid press conference held at the UN headquarters in New York.

OTTAWA -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday that the country is at stake as COVID-19 has been worsening.

"Save lives. Because that is what's at stake," Trudeau said at a press conference at his residence in Ottawa, resuming what was a nearly daily routine during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We're really at risk of seeing caseloads go up and hospitals get overwhelmed, and more loved ones dying. So we need to do everything we can, right now, to slow the spread of COVID-19, to stop this spike in its tracks," he said. Enditem
