Roundup: Iran's total COVID-19 cases surpass 840,000; Iraq's death toll nears 12,000

CAIRO, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The total number of COVID-19 infections confirmed in Iran rose on Saturday to 841,308, after 12,931 new cases were registered in the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, Iraq's death toll approached 12,000.

Sima Sadat Lari, the spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education, said at her daily briefing that between Friday and Saturday, 431 deaths of COVID-19 patients were registered, taking the total death toll of the epidemic in Iran to 44,327 so far.

She said that 596,136 patients have recovered from the disease, but 5,778 infected remain currently in critical condition in intensive care units.

In Iraq, 1,786 new COVID-19 cases were detected during the past 24 hours, bringing the total nationwide infections to 533,555.

The death toll from the coronavirus in Iraq rose to 11,925 after 42 fatalities were added, while the total recoveries increased to 463,040.

Turkey confirmed 5,532 new COVID-19 patients, raising the total number of cases in the country to 440,805, the Turkish Health Ministry announced.

It said 135 people died in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 12,219.

Saudi Arabia announced 221 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total tally to 355,034.

The recoveries rose to 342,882 in the kingdom, while the death toll reached 5,761 with the registration of 16 more fatalities.

In Morocco, the tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 320,962 with an addition of 4,702 new cases. 74 people died during the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 5,256, while the total recoveries hit 266,711.

Jordan's tally of infections from the virus reached 178,161 with 3,826 new ones, while the total death cases rose to 2,172 after 56 more were added.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced 1,262 new cases, raising the total confirmed cases in the country to 157,785.

The death toll in the UAE rose to 548 with one more death, while the total recoveries reached 148,080.

Kuwait reported 426 new COVID-19 cases and two more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 139,734 and the death toll to 863 in the country.

The Kuwaiti Health Ministry also announced the recovery of 511 more patients, taking the total recoveries in the country to 131,560.

The Qatari health ministry announced 174 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 137,062.

Meanwhile, 186 more recovered from the virus, bringing the overall recoveries to 134,100, while the fatalities remained 235 for the sixth consecutive day as no new deaths were reported, according to a ministry statement.

Meanwhile in Lebanon, the number of COVID-19 infections increased by 1,628 to 115,283, while the death toll went up by 10 to 894. A total of 66,135 patients have recovered.

Palestine reported 1,486 new coronavirus cases, taking the tally of infections in the Palestinian territories to 82,780, including 698 deaths and 70,312 recoveries.

In Algeria, the tally of coronavirus infections rose by 1,019 to 73,774 with 2,255 deaths and 48,183 recoveries. Enditem
