PHNOM PENH, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian authorities have arrested a 35-year-old local man for allegedly trafficking more than 48 kg of illicit drugs, the National Police reported on Sunday.

The suspect was first arrested on Wednesday near a gas station in the capital Phnom Penh's Sen Sok district with 100 grams of crystal methamphetamine and after being questioned, he confessed to having hidden a large amount of drugs in his rental room.

"The police raided his rental room in Phnom Penh's Pursenchey district on Thursday and seized a total of 48.1 kg of drugs including 47.7 kg of crystal methamphetamine, 302 grams of ecstasy, and 77 grams of nimetazepam," the National Police said on its website.

The suspect, along with the drug, had been sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for prosecution.

The Southeast Asian country has no death sentence for drug traffickers. Under its law, someone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of drugs could be jailed for life.

According to the Anti-Drug Police Department, the kingdom nabbed 15,770 drug suspects, including 224 foreigners, during the January-September period this year, confiscating some 702 kilograms of drugs. Enditem
