Live COVID-19 updates: COVID-19 related death toll in Africa nears 50,000: Africa CDC

BEIJING, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ADDIS ABABA -- The COVID-19 related death toll in the African continent has reached 49,412, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said on Sunday.

The continental disease control and prevention agency said in a statement that the total reported cases of COVID-19 cases in the continent has reached 2,057,001 as of Sunday afternoon.

A total of 1,737,277 people infected with COVID-19 have recovered across the continent so far, according to the Africa CDC.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health reported 12 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 58,160.

All of the new cases are imported cases.

On Sunday, three more cases of COVID-19 infection have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities. In all, 58,067 have fully recovered from the infection and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, the ministry said.

BUCHAREST -- Romania on Sunday announced 131 new COVID-19-related deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the country's total number of coronavirus deaths since the outbreak of the epidemic to 10,047.

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Health Ministry reported on Sunday 1,766 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the nationwide infections to 535,321.

The ministry also reported 33 new deaths and 2,412 recovered cases in the country, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 11,958 and the total recoveries to 465,452.

SHANGHAI -- Shanghai reported two new confirmed locally transmitted COVID-19 cases on Sunday, local authorities said.

Both cases are close contacts of previously confirmed COVID-19 cases, according to the municipal health commission.

One of the cases, a 46-year-old man surnamed Cao, is the colleague of a previously confirmed COVID-19 case surnamed Wu, who works at the cargo terminal at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 2,060 new COVID-19 cases and 38 new deaths on Sunday, making the tally at 447,341 and death toll at 6,388, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

The official data showed that 13,870 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

The total number of recovered patients in the country stood at 362,428 including 2,076 new recoveries on Sunday, said the DGHS. Enditem
