SUVA, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's Ministry of Agriculture said on Wednesday that it has been working hard with related departments to prevent the highly contagious African swine fever (ASF) from hitting the country, affecting the some 30,000 pig farmers nationwide.

The ministry said Fiji has so far remained free from both ASF and swine flu.

Agriculture Minister Mahendra Reddy said the Fijian government has established stringent control mechanisms and taken all necessary steps to prevent the import of the swine disease.

The agriculture ministry has been working in close collaboration with related departments in implementing the preventive measures including a stricter control over the imports of pork products and pig farming supplies, according to the minister.

Among the measures was also the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding between Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) and Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access (PHAMA) Plus Program, which is aimed at strengthening Fiji's preparedness for a possible ASF invasion. Enditem
