Namibian regional council, local authority elections kick off

WINDHOEK, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Namibia kicked off with the regional council and local authority area elections on Wednesday.

Records from the Electoral Commission of Namibia show that a total number of 1, 408, 670 eligible voters have been registered, and vote for leaders and political parties that will lead and drive development at grassroots in the 121 constituencies and 57 local authority areas nationwide.

A total of 4,102 polling points, operated in line with the preventative health measures against COVID-19, opened at 7:00 a.m. local time and will close at 9:00 p.m.

"The health and safety of all participants at all the different phases of the electoral process are of utmost importance. Therefore, all the polling points across the country adhere to strict preventative measures to lessen the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic as per National COVID-19 Regulations," said Theo Mujoro, the chief electoral officer of the Electoral Commission of Namibia.
