Live COVID-19 updates: Iran sees new record daily cases as total nears 900,000

BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TEHRAN -- Iran announced on Wednesday a new daily record of 13,843 confirmed COVID-19 infections, raising the total number to 894,385.

Among the newly infected in the past 24 hours, 2,370 had to be hospitalized, the spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education Sima Sadat Lari said at her daily briefing, as reported on the ministry's website.

As of Wednesday, the coronavirus pandemic has claimed 46,207 lives in Iran, after an overnight registration of 469 new deaths, according to the official report.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health reported seven new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 58,190.

All of the new cases are imported cases, who had already been placed on Stay-Home Notice or isolated upon arrival in Singapore.

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Health Ministry reported on Wednesday 2,438 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total nationwide infections to 542,187.

The ministry also reported 55 new deaths and 2,270 more recovered cases in the country, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 12,086 and the total recoveries have reached 472,054.

YANGON -- The death toll of COVID-19 has risen to 1,810 in Myanmar as of Wednesday, according to a release from the Health and Sports Ministry.

Myanmar reported 26 new deaths, of which 23 were infected patients with underlying diseases in the past 24 hours, the release said.

The number of confirmed cases has increased to 83,566 so far, with 1,330 new cases.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 970 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday, bringing the national total to 59,817.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press briefing that five of the new cases are imported and 965 are local transmissions.

Four more deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 345.

NEW YORK -- China, with its rising refining industry, has driven global oil demand as the COVID-19 pandemic slashed it, and is emerging in the global refining industry shift, according to the International Energy Agency.

Bloomberg quoted the agency as saying that as the demand for plastics and fuels grows in China and the rest of Asia, where economies are quickly rebounding from the pandemic, the refining capacity in China has been expanded. China's refiners are becoming a growing force in international markets for gasoline and diesel among other fuels, it said.

KABUL -- The Afghan Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday reported 212 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the national tally to 45,490, including 7,617 active cases.

A total of 1,476 new tests for the coronavirus were conducted, with 212 confirmed infections reported in 16 provinces out of the 34 provinces in Afghanistan, the ministry said in a statement. Enditem
