BISHKEK, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- A 16-day global campaign against gender based violence "Life without violence," which is dedicated to the International Day for the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women, started in Kyrgyzstan on Thursday.

Minister of Labor and Social Development of Kyrgyzstan Aliza Soltonbekova told reporters that the global campaign calls for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

"During the quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw an increase in domestic violence against women and girls," she said.

During the pandemic, the number of domestic violence increased in Kyrgyzstan by 10 percent. In total, 7,669 cases of domestic violence have been registered since the beginning of the year.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs initiated more than 300 criminal cases involving domestic violence against women and issued more than 7,000 security orders, according to data of the Ministry Labor and Social Development.

"Despite the crisis, important steps are being taken this year to protect women and children from violence," the minister added. Enditem
