BANGKOK, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Thai Smile Airways plans to open flights to several more provinces of Thailand with tourist destinations in the near future.

Acting Thai Smile Airways chief executive officer Charita Leelayudth confirmed on Thursday the airline firm, wholly owned by Thai Airways International, will expand its domestic routes between Suvarnabhumi airport on Bangkok's eastern outskirts and seven more provinces, namely Nan in the northern region, Nakhon Phanom, Loei and Roi Et in the northeastern region and Nakhon Si Thammarat, Ranong and Trang in the southern region.

Thai Smile Airways are currently shuttling passengers between Suvarnabhumi airport and 10 provinces, in which major tourist destinations are located, including Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in the northern region, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and Ubon Ratchathani in the northeastern region and Phuket, Krabi, Surat Thani, Songkhla and Narathiwat in the southern region.

Thai Smile Airways will also open interregional routes, such as that between Chiang Mai and Nakhon Si Thammarat and that between Udon Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat, Charita said.

The airline firm has strived to be financially viable with its fleet of 15 planes currently operating domestic flights in the pandemic situation, which has caused a sharp drop in its revenue, she said.

Its mother firm, the loss-ridden Thai Airways International, has been undergoing financial rehabilitation and debt repayment process at the order of the Central Bankruptcy Court. Enditem
