BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Health Ministry reported on Thursday 2,483 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total nationwide infections to 544,670.

The ministry also reported 39 new deaths and 2,322 more recovered cases in the country, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 12,125 and the total recoveries to 474,376.

HANOI -- Vietnam reported 10 new cases of COVID-19 infection on Thursday, bringing its total confirmed cases to 1,331 with 35 deaths from the disease so far, according to its Ministry of Health.

The new cases, who are all Vietnamese citizens, recently entered the country from abroad and were quarantined upon arrival, said the ministry.

TBILISI -- Georgia reported 3,801 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, bringing its total tally to 118,690.

A total of 1,293 of the 3,801 new cases were confirmed in the capital city of Tbilisi, the country's National Center for Disease Control and Public Health said.

YANGON -- Myanmar reported 1,639 new COVID-19 infections and 36 more deaths in the past 24 hours, according to a daily release from the Health and Sports Ministry on Thursday.

The total number of infections has risen to 85,205 and the death toll has increased to 1,846 on Thursday, the ministry's release said.

TOKYO -- The confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan increased by 2,502 to reach 140,288 as of Thursday night, according to the latest figures from the health ministry and local authorities.

The figure excludes the 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined in Yokohama near Tokyo earlier in the year.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 2,292 new COVID-19 cases and 37 new deaths on Thursday, making the tally at 456,438 and the death toll at 6,524, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

The official data showed that 17,052 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 935 new COVID-19 infections, the health ministry said on Thursday, bringing the national total to 60,752.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that four of the new cases are imported and 931 are local transmissions.

MUMBAI -- India's central bank governor Thursday cautioned on the downside risk to the country's economic growth due to recent surge in COVID-19 infections.

"We need to be watchful about the sustainability of demand after festivals and a possible reassessment of market expectations surrounding the vaccine," said Shaktikanta Das, governor of the Reserve Bank of India, addressing the 4th Annual Day of Foreign Exchange Dealers' Association of India.

TOKYO -- Japan's supermarket sales increased 2.8 percent on a same-store basis in October compared with last year, as people tend to stock up on food and other items amid the resurgence of COVID-19 cases across the country, the Japan Chain Stores Association said in a report on Thursday.

The rise in October after a fall in September reflected a drop in demand last October, when the nation's consumption tax was raised from 8 percent to 10 percent.

KAMPALA -- Uganda has adopted the Village Health Team (VHT) strategy as a new battlefront to quell the resurgence of coronavirus in the country, said the health ministry.

Under the VHT strategy, community members who have basic knowledge about healthcare go door to door to check on the health condition of local households. Once suspicious COVID-19 cases are detected, they will be sent to the nearest health center for further examination. The VHT members will also educate household members to follow social distancing rules and health tips to avoid contracting COVID.

MOSCOW -- Russia has reported a new single-day record of 25,487 coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, taking the total tally to 2,187,990, the country's COVID-19 response center said Thursday.

Meanwhile, 524 more fatalities were registered, also a single-day record, raising the national death toll to 38,062.

JERUSALEM -- Israel's Corona Cabinet has decided to allow the reopening of major shopping malls, markets and museums, the state's prime minister's office and Ministry of Health said in a joint statement on Thursday.

These places will be reopened for the first time since the start of a full lockdown in Israel on Sept. 18. The lockdown was imposed to contain a rapid resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

MANILA -- The Asian Development Bank on Thursday said it has approved a 250 million U.S. dollars loan to help finance the government of Papua New Guinea's (PNG) response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

PNG declared a state of emergency on March 21, and the Manila-based bank said subsequent public health emergency, closure of its borders, lockdowns, and other response measures have put pressure on the country's health system and economy. Enditem
