KHARTOUM, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of thousands of Sudanese citizens have flocked to the historic Khalifa Square in Omdurman city since early Friday to attend the funeral of former Sudanese Prime Minister and the leader of the National Umma Party (NUP) Sadiq al-Mahdi.

Al-Mahdi's body was transferred to Khartoum airport on the day from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). An official military funeral was held for al-Mahdi at the airport.

Al-Mahdi, aged 84, was flown to the UAE to receive treatment after he tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this month, but his condition deteriorated and died there from an acute pneumonia due to complications of the virus.

Earlier on Thursday, the NUP announced in a statement that al-Mahdi died from the novel coronavirus.

Al-Mahdi was born in December 1935 in Sudan's Omdurman city.

He served as Sudan's prime minister during 1966-1967 and 1986-1989. Enditem
