TASHKENT, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of private job agencies that recruit Uzbek citizens to work abroad have lost their licenses over embezzlement and fraud involving millions of U.S. dollars, the labor ministry said Friday.
The licenses of 55 job agencies were revoked due to violations of the license agreements, said the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations, and currently 51 executives and officials of 11 agencies are under criminal investigation.
They have embezzled around 76 million U.S. dollars from over 9,000 people who came to them to seek jobs abroad, it said.
The Central Asian country, with over 34 million people, exports its workforce mainly to Russia, Kazakhstan, and South Korea through a state agency for external labor migration.
But thousands of people also choose private agencies or look for jobs via their relatives and friends living abroad.
The Uzbek Central Bank said earlier this month that despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Uzbek labor migrants in Russia have sent home 4.8 billion dollars over the first 10 months of 2020. Enditem
