LONDON, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Britain's reproduction number, also known as the R number, for COVID-19 has decreased to between 0.9 and 1, according to the figures updated on Friday by the government.

The R number is the average number of secondary infections produced by a single infected person.

An R number between 0.9 and 1 means that on average every 10 people infected will infect between 9 and 10 other people, according to the Government Office for Science and the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE).

If the R number is greater than 1 the epidemic is growing, if the R number is less than 1 the epidemic is shrinking.

Meanwhile, the growth rate of COVID-19 in Britain is between minus 2 percent and 0 percent, which means the number of new infections is shrinking by between 0 percent and 2 percent every day, according to the latest figures.

Estimates for R number and growth rates are shown as a range, and the true values are likely to lie within this range, the Government Office for Science and the SAGE explain in a statement.

To bring life back to normal, countries such as Britain, China, Germany, Russia and the United States are racing against time to develop coronavirus vaccines. Enditem
