DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian police said on Friday they have seized 10 pieces of ivory weighing 23 kilograms and arrested two suspected poachers in connection with illegal possession of the ivory.

Emmanuel Lukula, the Kilimanjaro regional police commander, said the ivory was seized on Thursday evening in Rombo district along the Tanzania-Kenya border following a tip-off from Good Samaritans.

"Police believe that the two suspected poachers were smuggling the ivory into neighboring Kenya," he told a news conference.

Lukula warned that police will never allow poachers to continue killing the country's elephants for their personal gains.

In June 2020, President John Magufuli told parliament that following his anti-poaching crusade after he took office in November 2015, the number of elephants in the country had risen from 43,000 in 2015 to 51,000 in 2019. Enditem
