NEW YORK -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States topped 13 million on Friday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

U.S. COVID-19 case count rose to 13,047,202, with a total of 264,624 deaths, as of 4:26 p.m. local time (2126 GMT), according to the CSSE tally. (U.S.-COVID-19 cases)

YAOUNDE -- At least 13 people were killed overnight into Friday after a fire engulfed a tenement building in Cameroon's Far North region, according to local authorities.

The fire occurred at Guider locality of Mayo Louti division at a popular place called Carrefour Sedecoton, and was extinguished hours later by locals. (Cameroon-fire)

ADDIS ABABA -- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Refugee Agency, on Friday disclosed that more than 43,000 Ethiopians fled to neighboring Sudan amid the ongoing fighting between the Ethiopian federal government and an insurgent Northern Tigray regional government.

A statement from the UN refugee agency, which quoted UNHCR spokesperson Babar Baloch, revealed that "since the start of fighting in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region in early November, more than 43,000 refugees have crossed into Sudan seeking protection and shelter." (Ethiopia-Refugee)

DAR ES SALAAM -- Tanzanian police said on Friday they have seized 10 pieces of ivory weighing 23 kilograms and arrested two suspected poachers in connection with illegal possession of the ivory.

Emmanuel Lukula, the Kilimanjaro regional police commander, said the ivory was seized on Thursday evening in Rombo district along the Tanzania-Kenya border following a tip-off from Good Samaritans. (Tanzania-Ivory)

MOSCOW -- The Russian Foreign Ministry lodged a strong protest on Friday after a U.S. destroyer breached the country's maritime border in the Sea of Japan on Tuesday.
