BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TBILISI -- Georgia's stricter nationwide restrictions took effect on Saturday to curb the fast spread of coronavirus across the country.

Put in place are measures including a curfew, takeaway-only services for all restaurants, and the suspension of all intercity public transport services from Nov. 28, 2020 to Jan. 31, 2021.

LONDON -- The British government said on Saturday that it has appointed a vaccine minister, as it is preparing to inoculate millions of people against the novel coronavirus.

"The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Nadhim Zahawi MP as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Social Care," the Downing Street said.

VIENNA -- Nearly 1,000 COVID-19 patients died in Austria from Nov. 18 to Nov. 28, according to data published by the Austrian Interior Ministry on Saturday.

The coronavirus death toll of Austria has risen from 2,054 to 3,018 over the past 10 days, with 132 fatalities recorded in the last 24 hours, said the ministry.

NEW DELHI -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday visited three vaccine manufacturing facilities in the country to review the development and manufacturing process of COVID-19 vaccines, officials said.

Modi embarked on the daylong three-city tour in the morning to visit the country's three vaccine manufacturing hubs.

NANJING -- A new freight train route was launched on Saturday to link Hamburg in Germany and Xuzhou, an industrial and transportation hub in east China, amid strengthened China-Europe rail links after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted sea and air traffic.

A train loaded with machinery parts and epidemic prevention supplies departed from Xuzhou on Saturday morning. It is the first China-Europe freight train the city in Jiangsu Province has sent to Germany, according to the China Railway Shanghai Group Co., Ltd.

LONDON -- London Zoo, one of the British capital's top visitor attractions, is set to re-open when England ends its second national COVID-19 lockdown on Dec. 2, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), which runs the zoo, has announced.

MINSK -- Belarus reported 1,691 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, taking its total to 133,324, the country's health ministry said.

There have been 1,303 new recoveries in the past 24 hours, bringing its total to 111,455, the ministry added. Enditem
