LONDON -- Another 15,871 people in Britain have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 1,605,172, according to official figures released on Saturday.

The coronavirus-related deaths in Britain rose by 479 to 58,030, the data showed.

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Health Ministry reported on Saturday 1,606 new COVID-19 cases, raising the number of nationwide infections to 548,821.

The new cases included 508 in the capital Baghdad, 201 in Nineveh, 194 in Kirkuk, and 139 in Duhok, the ministry said in a statement.

ADDIS ABABA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the African continent has reached 2,137,871, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Saturday.

The continental disease control and prevention agency said in a statement that the death toll related to the pandemic stood at 51,248 as of Saturday afternoon.

NEW DELHI -- India's vaccine maker Serum Institute of India (SII) Saturday said it will apply within two weeks for the emergency use of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The announcement was made by SII chief Adar Poonawalla after a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"We are in process of applying for emergency licensing in the next two weeks. We will have to wait and see when we get the authorization," said Poonawalla during a virtual press conference minutes after Modi's visit to SII's facility in Pune.

NEW YORK -- New York City's COVID-19 infection rate on 7-day average kept on rising and reached 3.64 percent, compared with 3.33 percent one day earlier, Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted on Saturday.

"Get a free COVID test this weekend and help our city fight back," added the mayor.

The rate topped 3 percent last week and has remained above the level ever since. Three percent is deemed by the municipal government as a threshold to a second wave of the pandemic.

ANKARA -- Turkey recorded 30,103 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily record in the country, Turkish Health Ministry said Saturday.

The total number of symptomatic COVID-19 patients in Turkey stood at 487,912. The death toll from the coronavirus rose by 182 to 13,373, while the total recoveries climbed to 396,227 in the last 24 hours, said the ministry.

NANJING -- A new freight train route was launched on Saturday to link Hamburg in Germany and Xuzhou, an industrial and transportation hub in east China, amid strengthened China-Europe rail links after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted sea and air traffic.

A train loaded with machinery parts and epidemic prevention supplies departed from Xuzhou on Saturday morning. It is the first China-Europe freight train the city in Jiangsu Province has sent to Germany, according to the China Railway Shanghai Group Co., Ltd.

TBILISI -- Georgia's stricter nationwide restrictions took effect on Saturday to curb the fast spread of coronavirus across the country.
