AMMAN, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- King Abdullah II of Jordan on Sunday stressed the need to step up international efforts to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution.

The Jordanian leader made his remarks at a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Aqaba, within the framework of ongoing Jordanian-Palestinian coordination and consultation, according to a statement by the Royal Court.

King Abdullah stressed Jordan's full support for the Palestinian people and underscored the importance of preserving the legal and historical status quo in Jerusalem, expressing Jordan's rejection of all unilateral measures to alter the city's identity or religious sites.

He said Jordan would continue undertaking its historical and religious role in safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in the city, in line with the Hashemite Custodianship.

President Abbas expressed appreciation of Jordan's steadfast positions, and support of the Palestinians' rights and legitimate cause.

Abbas added that the king's focus on the centrality of the Palestinian cause and the importance of continuing to strive towards just and comprehensive peace reaffirms the deep-rooted ties between the two leaders and peoples. Enditem
