QUITO, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- All 24 of Ecuador's provinces have registered an increase in novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infections, with 1,208 cases reported in the last 24 hours for a total of 192,117 cases, the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) reported on Sunday.

Additionally, another 51 deaths were also reported, bringing the number of deaths to 8,989.

The Ecuadorian provinces of Azuay, Canar, Galapagos, Pichincha, and Santa Elena have registered the greatest increase of cases comparing the accumulated rate of this week with the previous one.

The MSP stated that the Andean province of Pichincha, the current epicenter of the pandemic in Ecuador and where the capital of Quito is located, has reported 36.2 percent of the total infections in the country, with 69,513 cases and 1,949 deaths.

The MSP added that the percentage of positivity for the virus remains at 23 percent per 100,000 inhabitants.

Ecuador, which began social reopening in June to reactivate the economy after three months of mandatory quarantine, is expecting the delivery of a first batch of 50,000 vaccines for COVID-19 in the first quarter of 2021.

The nation plans to acquire a total of 18 million doses to immunize 65 percent of the population, or about 9 million people, according to health authorities. Enditem
