BEIJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County hit another grim COVID-19 milestone Tuesday, with the highest single-day number of new cases and hospitalized people since the outbreak of the pandemic.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed 7,593 new cases and 46 new deaths in a daily release. The county, home to over 10 million residents, the most populous in the country, has seen 408,396 positive COVID-19 cases in total, with 7,700 deaths so far.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil registered 50,909 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the national count to 6,386,787, the Health Ministry said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 697 more COVID-19 deaths were recorded, taking the nationwide tally to 173,817, it said.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 511 more cases of COVID-19 as of 0:00 a.m. Wednesday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 35,163.

The daily caseload rose above 500 in four days, growing in triple digits for 25 days running owing to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province as well as imported cases.

SUVA -- The South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu is free from COVID-19 again after the country's first such case tested negative.

According to the island nation's English newspaper the Daily Post on Wednesday, Vanuatu's Prime Minister Bob Loughman said the nation has contained its first COVID-19 case after test results from the first COVID-19 patient sent to Australia for further examination came back negative.

BEIJING -- China's National Health Commission said Wednesday that it received reports of nine newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Tuesday, including two domestically transmitted cases and seven imported ones.

All the domestically transmitted cases were reported in Inner Mongolia, the commission said in its daily report.

TRIPOLI -- The National Center for Disease Control of Libya on Tuesday reported 608 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the national count to 82,417.

The center said in a statement that 391 more recoveries and 13 more deaths were registered.

OTTAWA -- Canada continued seeing sharply increased COVID-19 cases, with a total of 382,812 COVID-19 cases and 12,195 fatalities as of Tuesday evening, according to CTV.

More than 6,100 new cases were reported across the country on Tuesday.

NEW YORK -- U.S. COVID-19 deaths surpassed 270,000 on Tuesday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

With the national caseload topping 13.6 million, the death toll across the United States rose to 270,003 as of 5:26 p.m. local time (2226 GMT), according to the CSSE data.

SANTIAGO -- In a worst case scenario of a COVID-19 second wave hitting Chile, officials estimate the healthcare system may see as many as 9,560 new daily cases of infection, a leading daily said on Tuesday.

By January, Chile could be looking at three different situations: 3,026 new daily cases; 6,608 daily cases, similar to the second waves currently experienced in Europe; or 9,560 daily cases, the daily El Mercurio reported, citing Health Minister Enrique Paris. Enditem
