TASHKENT, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan's law enforcement bodies have arrested a Uzbek citizen suspected of recruiting young men to join Katiba al-Tawhid wal-Jihad, an Islamist militant group operating in Syria, the Uzbek Interior Ministry said Wednesday.

According to a police statement, the detainee fell under the influence of the leaders of international terrorist organizations while in Egypt, and was actively involved in recruiting Uzbek students there to join the militant group in Syria.

Extremist material was found in the detainee's cell phone, police said, adding that a criminal investigation against the man was underway.

Uzbekistan's Supreme Court listed Katiba al-Tawhid wal-Jihad as a terrorist organization in 2016. Enditem
