BERLIN, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- The global semiconductor market is expected to grow by four percent to 428 billion U.S. dollars in 2020, the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI) said on Thursday.

"Despite the corona(virus) crisis, the global semiconductor market has developed surprisingly well and is performing better than the global economy," said Stephan zur Verth, chairman of the Semiconductor Components Division in the ZVEI Electronic Components and Systems Association, in a statement.

Last year, sales were relatively low, partly explaining the growth this year. In 2020, the markets in China and the United States were "driving the growth," the ZVEI noted.

China is set to contribute the largest share -- 35 percent -- of sales in the global semiconductor market this year, followed by the United States with 21 percent, according to the ZVEI.

The European market is "experiencing a sharp decline in sales," the association noted. In Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), the semiconductor market is projected to decline by around eight percent to 38 billion U.S. dollars this year.

Germany recorded a sharp drop in sales of around 14 percent to 12.3 billion U.S. dollars.

"Europe and particularly Germany are experiencing a sharper slump in sales caused by the corona(virus) pandemic than other parts of the world due to their high exposure to the automotive market," said zur Verth.

For 2021, ZVEI expects global sales in the semiconductor market to increase by eight percent to 463 billion U.S. dollars. The biggest "growth drivers" would include 5G, artificial intelligence (AI) and edge computing. Enditem
