Live COVID-19 updates: Canada's cases surpass 400,000

BEIJING, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

OTTAWA -- Canada reported 3,763 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the national total to 400,031, according to CTV.

The COVID-19 death toll rose to 12,470 as of Friday afternoon.

SANTIAGO -- Chile's Ministry of Health on Friday reported 1,729 new cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in the previous 24 hours, the highest figure since early November, bringing the total caseload since March to 557,135.

In its daily pandemic report, the ministry also reported 39 deaths in 24 hours from causes associated with COVID-19, raising the death toll to 15,558.

TUNIS -- Tunisian Health Ministry on Friday evening reported 1,403 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections to 100,683.

The death toll from the virus rose by 56 to 3,415 in the North African country, according to the ministry statement.

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Health Ministry reported on Friday 1,855 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total nationwide infections to 560,622.

It also reported 26 new deaths and 1,909 more recovered cases in the country, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 12,387 and the total recoveries to 489,772.

NAIROBI -- The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners have announced the launch of a new alliance to guide action on misleading information about the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa.

Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa said the launch of Africa Infodemic Response Alliance (AIRA), will boost efforts to eradicate rampant disinformation that hobbled the fight against the pandemic in the continent.

YANGON -- The number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 96,520 with 2,059 deaths as of Friday, according to a release from the Health and Sports Ministry.

Myanmar reported 1,502 new infections and 31 more deaths in the past 24 hours, the release said.

MADRID -- As of Friday morning, Spain reported 10,127 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, bringing the national tally to 1,675,902, the country's health ministry reported.

Meanwhile, 254 more COVID-19 deaths were recorded, taking the country's death toll from the disease to 46,038, it said.

ADDIS ABABA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the African continent has reached 2,215,216 as of Friday afternoon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said on Friday.

The continental disease control and prevention agency said in a statement that the death toll related to the pandemic stood at 52,824.

TOKYO -- The confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan increased by 2,433 to reach 158,402 as of Friday night, according to the latest figures from the health ministry and local authorities.

The figure excludes the 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined in Yokohama near Tokyo earlier in the year. Enditem
