BEIJING, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

WASHINGTON -- The United States on Friday registered a record 225,201 new COVID-19 infections within 24 hours, with the national caseload surpassing 14.19 million and the death toll topping 276,00, according to Johns Hopkins University.

During the same period, the country reported 2,506 COVID-19 related deaths, the university said.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 583 more cases of COVID-19 as of 0:00 a.m. Saturday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 36,915.

The daily caseload fell below 600 after recording 629 on the previous day, but it has hovered above 300 since Nov. 19 except for Nov. 23.

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's Health Ministry on Friday reported a record daily increase of 12,127 COVID-19 cases, bringing its national caseload to 1,156,770.

Meanwhile, the country's death toll from the virus increased by 690, reaching 108,863.

BEIJING -- China's National Health Commission said Saturday that it received reports of 17 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Friday, two of which were domestically transmitted in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Fifteen cases were imported from outside the mainland and reported in Shanghai, Henan, Guangdong, Sichuan, Beijing, Shanxi, and Fujian, the commission said in its daily report.

OTTAWA -- Canada reported 3,763 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the national total to 400,031, according to CTV.

The COVID-19 death toll rose to 12,470 as of Friday afternoon. Enditem
