SAO PAULO, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's COVID-19 death toll on Monday reached 177,317 after registering 376 deaths in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said.

Meanwhile, a total of 20,371 new cases were reported, bringing the national count to 6,623,911.

The state of Sao Paulo, the epicenter of the outbreak in the country, has so far registered 43,040 deaths and 1,288,878 cases.

The South American country has experienced an increase in both cases and deaths from the virus since November, threatening the fragile health system, with the country's hospitals once again almost fully occupied.

Currently, 18 out of the 27 Brazilian states are seeing an increase in average daily deaths from the disease. Endtiem
