BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 2,234 new COVID-19 infections in the highest daily spike since the outbreak, bringing the national total to 78,499, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that five of the new cases are imported and 2,229 are local transmissions.

SUVA -- Samoa's two imported COVID-19 cases have been discharged from quarantine after negative test results reported earlier in this week.

According to a report on Thursday by Radio New Zealand (RNZ), Samoa's Director General of Health Leausa Take Naseri said the coronavirus was no longer active in the men aged 23 and 73.

TEHRAN -- Iran's Health Ministry reported 10,403 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, raising the total nationwide infections to 1,083,023.

The pandemic has so far claimed 51,496 lives in Iran, up by 284 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

BERLIN -- Germany reported 23,679 new COVID-19 infections within one day, a new record, bringing the total to 1.24 million, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Thursday.

The number of deaths related to COVID-19 in the country increased by 440 within one day to a tally of 20,372 on Thursday, according to RKI, the federal government agency for disease control and prevention. Germany witnessed a new record of 590 COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday.

BEIJING -- Eleven COVID-19 patients were newly discharged from hospitals after recovery on the Chinese mainland Wednesday, the National Health Commission said in a daily report Thursday.

There were 285 confirmed cases still being treated, including five in severe conditions, the report showed.

WARSAW -- Poland confirmed on Wednesday 12,168 new COVID-19 cases, bringing its total caseload to 1,088,346, according to the country's health ministry.

The ministry also announced 568 new deaths from the virus, bringing the national death toll to 21,160. Enditem
