JAKARTA, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Indonesia's province of Aceh have rescued a sun bear that had been stuck in a wire trap for several days in a plantation area.

The eight-year-old female sun bear was initially found by locals in Meurah Dua area, Pidie Jaya district, on Tuesday, who later contacted the local authorities, the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency's head Agus Arianto said in the province's capital Banda Aceh on Saturday, as reported by state news agency Antara.

According to the agency, the bear had to have one of her legs amputated after suffering horrific injuries caused by the trap.

The team believed that the bear had been ensnared in a wire trap for seven days.

The agency later called on the locals not to install snare traps in the future in a bid to protect endangered species. Enditem
