WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Electoral College cast votes on Monday for a new president based on the 2020 election results, making Democrat Joe Biden's White House victory official.
The former vice president has surpassed 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the White House after California, which has 55 Electoral College votes, the most of any state, put Biden over the top on Monday evening. (US-Electoral College)

UNITED NATIONS -- Around 1.8 billion people are at heightened risk of COVID-19 and other diseases because they use or work in health care facilities without basic water services, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said Monday in a report.

CARACAS -- Venezuela's Prosecutor General Tarek William Saab on Monday ordered the arrest of 17 people involved in the fatal Dec. 12 shipwreck that killed "at least 20 people" off the coast of east Sucre state.
"Venezuelan justice arrested 17 people, who have been charged with the crimes of human trafficking and conspiracy," the prosecutor said via Twitter. (Venezuela-Shipwreck)

LAGOS -- A Nigerian official said Monday that government negotiators are in touch with kidnappers of 333 students of a secondary school in Katsina, a state in northwest Nigeria.
Aminu Masari, the state governor, updated the information when he briefed President Muhammadu Buhari.
