Live COVID-19 updates: China to inoculate key groups in winter, spring

BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BEIJING -- China will start inoculating some key groups with COVID-19 vaccines in this winter-spring period, said a National Health Commission (NHC) official in Beijing on Saturday.

In a two-step vaccination drive, the vaccines will be first given to priority groups, including those engaged in handling imported cold-chain products, and people working in sectors such as port inspection and quarantine, aviation, public transport, fresh market, medical treatment and disease control, Cui Gang, an official with NHC's disease control department, said at a press conference.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported 109 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, taking its total tally to 8,078.

The new confirmed cases included 102 local infections, with 42 cases of unknown origin, according to a CHP press briefing.

YEREVAN -- Armenia on Saturday reported 920 new COVID-19 cases, taking its total to 153,173, according to the country's National Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).

Data from the center showed that 718 patients have recovered and 20 have died in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries and deaths to 131,931 and 2,616, respectively.

LAGOS -- With COVID-19 cases flaring up again in some parts of Nigeria, authorities in Lagos, the nation's economic hub on Friday night announced the banning of large social gatherings like carnivals, concerts and street parties until further notice, following the increase in coronavirus cases in the state.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos state, made this known in a statement made available to Xinhua, saying this calls for caution among residents.

MOSCOW -- Russia confirmed 28,209 coronavirus cases over the past day, taking the total number of infections to 2,819,429, the country's official COVID-19 monitoring and response center said Saturday.

Moscow registered 6,459 new coronavirus cases, bringing the capital's total to 728,637.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN -- Brunei reported no new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, with the national tally of cases standing at 152.

According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, there is no active cases in the country and the total number of recovered cases remain at 149.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally surpassed 10 million-mark and the death toll crossed 145,000-mark on Saturday.
