Live COVID-19 updates: Brazil's death toll nears 190,000

BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil registered 762 new deaths from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, raising the death toll to 189,982, the Ministry of Health said Thursday.

In its daily pandemic report, the ministry also reported 58,428 new cases in the same period, for a total of 7,423,945 cases since Feb. 26, when Latin America's first case was detected in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo.

QUITO -- The Ecuadorian Ministry of Health on Thursday reported 926 new cases and 14 deaths from COVID-19 in the previous 24 hours, for a total caseload of 208,010 and a death toll of 9,427.

The death toll may be close to 14,000 as another 4,550 deaths are suspected of being COVID-19 related.

BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland on Thursday reported 14 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases, including seven locally transmitted cases in northeast China's Liaoning Province, the National Health Commission said Friday.

Seven of the new COVID-19 cases arrived from outside the mainland, the commission said in its daily report.

RABAT -- Morocco has secured acquisition of 65 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine from two suppliers, Health Minister Khalid Ait Taleb announced on Thursday during the weekly cabinet meeting.

The North African country is aiming for a mass vaccination of 25 million people or 80 percent of its total population.

JERUSALEM -- The COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Israel will speed up to a 24/7 format, after infections with the new strain of the virus were detected, the state's Ministry of Health said Thursday night.

According to the ministry's statement, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein has decided to dramatically speed up the campaign, which began on Sunday, with an aim to reach more than 100,000 vaccines a day.

NEW YORK -- Of the 226,296 COVID-19 tests reported on Wednesday in New York state, 12,568 were positive, or 5.55 percent of the total, down from 5.84 percent one day earlier, tweeted Governor Andrew Cuomo on Thursday.

Total hospitalizations were 6,928 on Wednesday, up from 6,864 on Tuesday, added Cuomo. The state's COVID-19 hospitalizations topped 6,000 on Dec. 15 and have remained above the level ever since. Enditem
