Live COVID-19 updates: Los Angeles County reports record daily count of deaths

BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the United States, reported on Thursday record daily count of COVID-19 deaths for the second day in a row amid worsening pandemic.

The county's Department of Public Health confirmed 148 additional deaths in a daily release, shattering the previous record of 145 set on Wednesday. There have been 9,299 COVID-19 deaths in the county since the start of the pandemic early this year.

CAIRO -- Egypt reported on Thursday late night 1,021 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total cases registered in the country to 128,993, said the Egyptian Health Ministry.

It is the first time in over five months for Egypt's coronavirus daily cases to surpass 1,000 since the country reported 1,025 infections on July 8.

BANGKOK -- Thailand on Friday recorded 81 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

Of the total, 37 were local infections, 35 migrant workers and nine others imported cases. Most of the infected migrant workers were asymptomatic, CCSA spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin said.

KIGALI -- The Rwandan Ministry of Health on Thursday inaugurated a COVID-19 testing laboratory at Kigali International Airport, the country's major airport in capital city Kigali, to ease service delivery for travellers to Rwanda.

"Unlike previously when samples for incoming travellers were taken at designated hotels, all passengers will be tested at the airport and get their results within 24 hours," Health Minister Daniel Ngamije told journalists at the launch event. Enditem
