BANGKOK, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- Thailand on Friday confirmed 279 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily increase since Dec. 22, and two new deaths, official data showed.
Of the new cases, 273 were local infections while six others were those in quarantine upon arrival from abroad, Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman of the Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), told a daily news briefing.
This brought the number of the country's total confirmed cases to 7,163, with 5,142 of which being local infections while 2,021 others being those in quarantine, Taweesin said. The number of deaths rose to 63.
The two deceased patients reported Friday were a 44-year-old Thai man, who had visited a crowded bar in Bangkok, and a 70-year-old Thai man, who had illegally slipped across the Thai-Myanmar border in Mae Sot district of Tak province.
To contain the spread of the viral disease, Thailand imposed restrictive measures by province according to risk levels and caseloads, classifying all the provinces into four categories, namely the highly-controlled, controlled, under-high-surveillance and under-surveillance.
The CCSA spokesman said all restaurants in Bangkok and eight other provinces, which were categorized either as a highly-controlled or controlled area, are strongly suggested to only open for take-out orders and to provide no seating for customers. All entertainment venues in these regions are temporarily closed. Enditem
