Live COVID-19 updates: Bangladesh's cases rise to 515,184, death toll reaches 7,599

BEIJING, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 684 new COVID-19 cases and 23 new deaths on Saturday, making the tally at 515,184 and death toll at 7,599, the Directorate General of Health Services said.

The official data showed that 9,701 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia on Saturday reported 2,295 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the national total to 117,373.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that nine of the new cases are imported and 2,286 are local transmissions.

MINSK -- Belarus reported 1,902 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, taking its total to 198,125, according to the country's health ministry.

There have been 3,007 new recoveries in the past 24 hours, bringing the total recoveries to 181,109, the ministry added.

TBILISI -- Georgia reported 342 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, bringing its total to 228,752.

Among the new cases, 183 were confirmed in the capital city of Tbilisi, the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) said.

KABUL -- A total of 120 new COVID-19 cases were registered in Afghanistan over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of patients affected with the disease in the country to 52,706, according to a statement from the Public Health Ministry on Saturday.

The statement also said that 11 patients died over the same period, bringing the number of COVID-19 related deaths to 2,222 since the breakout of the pandemic in the country in February last year.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 7,203 within one day to 758,473, with the death toll adding by 226 to 22,555, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.

According to the ministry, 7,582 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 625,518.

BEIJING -- Beijing added another medium-risk area for COVID-19 on Saturday, bringing the city's number of medium-risk areas to seven, a local health official said Saturday.

Henan Village in Shunyi District was upgraded to a medium-risk region starting on Saturday, Pang Xinghuo, deputy director of the Beijing center for disease control and prevention, told a press briefing.

ULAN BATOR -- The number of COVID-19 infections in Mongolia rose to 1,242 after 22 new cases were recorded in the past 24 hours, Mongolia's National Center for Communicable Diseases said Saturday.

"A total of 11,152 tests for COVID-19 were conducted across the country yesterday and 22 of them were positive," Amarjargal Ambaselmaa, head of the center's surveillance department, said at a daily press conference.

SEOUL -- South Korea decided on Saturday to extend its tightened social-distancing rules for two more weeks amid a continued COVID-19 resurgence.

The Seoul metropolitan area will be placed under the second-highest Level 2.5 social-distancing guidelines for two more weeks until Jan. 17, according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters.

HARBIN -- China's Heilongjiang Province on Friday reported three asymptomatic COVID-19 cases, according to the provincial health commission.

All three cases were found in Aihui District of Heihe city. One case, an 18-year-old male student, is a close contact of a previously confirmed case, while the other two, a married couple, were diagnosed after a round of district-wide nucleic acid tests. Enditem
