DAMASCUS, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed on Saturday by a car bomb explosion that rocked a rebel-held city in the northeastern province of Hasakah, Syria, a war monitor reported.

A child and a woman were among those killed when a car bomb exploded near a vegetable market in the city of Ras al-Ayn, which is controlled by the Turkey-backed rebels in the countryside of Hasakah, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The UK-based watchdog group said four others were wounded in the explosion, including some critically wounded.

State news agency SANA also reported the explosion without giving more details.

The explosion is the latest in a string of bombings targeting areas controlled by the Turkish forces and Turkey-backed rebels in northern and northeastern Syria.

No party claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Ras al-Ayn had previously been under the control of the Kurdish militia of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) before falling into the hands of the Turkey-backed rebels in 2019. Enditem
