LOS ANGELE -- Nine people, including seven juveniles, lost their lives in a severe collision between an SUV and a pickup truck on State Route 33 in Fresno County, California on Friday, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said Saturday.

The crash occurred at around 8 p.m. local time (0400 GMT on Saturday) when the driver of the SUV, a 28-year-old man headed southbound on the highway, suddenly lost control and bumped head-on into the pickup traveling in the opposite direction, the patrol told a news conference. (US-Car Accident)

PARIS -- Two French soldiers were killed and one was injured when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in northeastern Mali on Saturday, the Elysee Palace said.

BOGOTA -- Colombia registered 11,528 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 1,666,408, the country's health authorities said Saturday.

STOCKHOLM -- Borje Ekholm, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Swedish telecom giant Ericsson, has been lobbying the Swedish government to repeal a ban that prohibits Huawei and ZTE from participating in the country's 5G construction, according to local newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

In a series of text messages to Swedish Foreign Trade Minister Anna Hallberg, the CEO has urged a review of the ban by the Swedish Post and Telecommunication Administration, which requires operators to withdraw the Chinese companies from local 5G infrastructure by January 2025. QUITO, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador's Ministry of Public Health on Saturday reported 1,135 new COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours, bringing the national tally to 214,513.
