Live COVID-19 updates: Russia adds 24,150 COVID-19 cases

BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TEHRAN -- Iran's Health Ministry reported 5,960 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, raising the total nationwide number to 1,243,434.

The pandemic has so far claimed 55,540 lives in Iran, up by 102 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 1,704 new COVID-19 infections, the health ministry said on Sunday, bringing the national total to 119,077.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that five of the new cases are imported and 1,699 are local transmissions.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN -- Brunei reported 15 new imported cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the national tally to 172.

According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, all these new cases are part of a group of 81 people who arrived in Brunei on Dec. 21, 2020 from London, Britain. One of the cases started developing symptoms (sore throat) on Dec. 31, 2020, while the other cases showed no signs of infection.

MOSCOW -- Russia recorded 24,150 more COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, down from 26,301 a day earlier, the country's COVID-19 response center said Sunday.

The national tally of COVID-19 cases has increased to 3,236,787, including 58,506 deaths and 2,618,882 recoveries, the center said.

BEIJING -- Beijing reported one new locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 case and one imported case on Saturday, local health authorities said Sunday.

No new asymptomatic or suspected COVID-19 cases were reported in Beijing on Saturday, said the Beijing municipal health commission.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,323,965 on Sunday as 18,177 more cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the federal health ministry.

According to the data, the death toll mounted to 149,435 with 217 new deaths. Enditem
