JAKARTA, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) has died in the Cot Girek conservation area in North Aceh district of Indonesia's Aceh province, a local official said on Sunday.

Head of Aceh province's Natural Resources Conservation Agency Agus Arianto said the elephant was named Otto aged 25 years old.

A medical team from the agency and Syiah Kuala University in the province has taken samples from the elephant's organs for tests at the Indonesian police's forensic laboratory.

"As a result of the necropsy, the medical team found that the elephant's intestines were blackened, and infected by endoparasites," Arianto said.

Before the mammal died, officers found that Otto was in a weak condition, lacked of appetite, and had diarrhea.

Otto was a tame elephant that was caught in Krueng Sabee sub district, Aceh Jaya district, and then treated at the Conservation Response Unit in Cot Girek sub district.

The Sumatran elephant is a protected wildlife only found on Indonesia's island of Sumatra.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature includes the Sumatran elephant in the red list of threatened species, with a critically endangered status. Enditem
