MEXICO CITY, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Former Peru international midfielder Juan Reynoso has been named as the head coach of his former club Cruz Azul, just a week before the start of the 2020 Liga MX season.

The 51-year-old replaces Uruguayan Robert Dante Siboldi, who resigned last month after the club's semifinal elimination from the Apertura tournament.

"Welcome home, Juan," Cruz Azul said in a statement on their official website. "You know what it means to wear our shirt with pride and commitment."

Reynoso made 236 appearances for Cruz Azul as a player from 1994 to 2002 before turning to coaching two years later.

He has been out of work since being sacked by Cruz Azul's Mexican rivals Puebla in December.

Reynoso's first match in charge will be an away clash against Santos Laguna in their Liga MX Clausura opener next Sunday. Enditem
