BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

LOS ANGELES -- COVID-19 deaths in Los Angeles County topped 11,000 on Tuesday as cases continued to rise across this most populous county in the United States.

The county's Department of Public Health confirmed 224 new deaths in a daily release on Tuesday, bringing the county's death toll since the outbreak of the pandemic to 11,071.

VIENTIANE -- The next target group of frontline medical staff is scheduled to be vaccinated against COVID-19 after more than 100 people vaccinated earlier showed no side effects.

The vaccine, which was first administered in late November 2020, produced good results, local daily Vientiane Times on Wednesday quoted Deputy Minister of Health, Phouthone Muongpak, as saying.

ULAN BATOR -- Mongolia confirmed 41 more COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing its national tally to 1,349, according to the country's National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD).

The latest confirmed cases were locally transmitted, including five health workers of the NCCD, Amarjargal Ambaselmaa, head of the surveillance department of the center, said at a daily press conference.

BISHKEK -- The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Kyrgyzstan rose to 81,656 after 144 new cases were reported on Wednesday.

The Republican Headquarters for Combating COVID-19 said health workers had conducted 3,562 coronavirus tests within a day.

The headquarters also reported 215 more recoveries over the past day, bringing the total to 77,170, while the death toll mounted to 1,361 as one more COVID-19 patient died in Bishkek in the last 24 hours. Enditem
