SINGAPORE, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 23 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 58,836, as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong received his first dose of the vaccine.

"We will have ample vaccines for everyone, so I hope Singaporeans and long-term residents will get vaccinated when your turn comes, and help keep everyone safer," Lee said in a Facebook post.

Lee said last month that Singapore will make vaccinations free for all Singaporeans and the long-term residents who are currently staying in the country.

Among Friday's new cases, 21 are imported cases and two are community cases.

On Friday, 18 more cases of COVID-19 infection have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities. In all, 58,580 have fully recovered from the infection and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, the ministry said.

There are currently 61 patients who are still in hospital. Of these, most are stable or improving, and one is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Furthermore, 166 people, who have mild symptoms, or are clinically well but still test positive for COVID-19, are isolated and cared for at community facilities.

Altogether 29 people have passed away from complications due to the COVID-19 infection. Enditem
